Avoid the Home Horror Story
It’s that time of year again where scary stories abound and your kid’s teeth are about to fall out due to candy overload. Around our office though, we don’t hear ghost stories. We hear stories that happened to you.
Real stories about clients who woke up in the middle of the night to smoke coming out of their home office. Real stories about client’s pipes bursting and sending water everywhere when they were just planning on hosting a wedding reception that weekend. THOSE kinds of stories.
So, with October upon us and winter coming in hot (or cold depending how you look at it), what are we to do to avoid those home horror stories? It’s just a matter of time before a freeze is upon us so take the time to prepare.
Here’s a great “Don’t Forget” do list for the season!
- Blow out your sprinkler system. Disconnect your hose from the side of your house. Check for any broken sprinkler heads that might cause problems if water were to freeze and expand. Keep the ice skating rinks to the city.
- Clean out those gutters. Leaves love to fall and clog. Seems pretty innocent until snow is trapped in your gutters developing an ice dam that then causes you some major problems.
- Examine windows and doors for cracks. You just might need an application of exterior caulk for moisture intrusion prevention, but also to help with that heating bill.
- Test your sump pump. Check your owner’s manual for the best way to ensure yours is working properly.
Let’s keep planned scariness to the haunted houses and the corn mazes this season… not your own home.
